Flu has forced Riccardo Muti out of concerts with the New York Philharmonic this week. He will be replaced by Michael Christie, right, who will make his debut as conductor of the orchestra, leading works by Elgar and Copland on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 11 a.m. and Saturday at 8 p.m. At all three concerts Pinchas Zukerman will be featured as the soloist in Elgar’s Violin Concerto. Mr. Christie will also conduct at 2 p.m. Saturday, when the program will include Schubert’s Octet, performed by musicians from the orchestra, followed by Copland’s Third Symphony. Mr. Christie has been the music director of the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the Phoenix Symphony since 2005 and is also the music director of the Colorado Summer Music festival and principal guest conductor of the Queensland Orchestra in Australia, where he was chief conductor until 2004. He came to international attention in 1995 when he won a special prize for outstanding potential at the First International Sibelius Conductors’ Competition, in Helsinki.
